Respiratory System
What is it?
The respiratory system is a network of organs and tissues that help you breathe. It includes your airways, lungs, and blood vessels. The muscles that power your lungs are also part of the respiratory system.
Main Organs
• Nose & Nasal Cavity: Filters, warms, and moistens air.
• Pharynx (Throat): Pathway for air and food.
• Larynx (Voice Box): Contains vocal cords and prevents food from entering the airways.
• Trachea (Windpipe): Connects the larynx to the bronchi.
• Bronchi & Bronchioles: Airways leading into the lungs.
• Lungs: The main organs where gas exchange occurs (oxygen in, carbon dioxide out).
Functions
• Gas Exchange: Provides oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide.
• Sound Production: Air moving through the vocal cords creates sound.
• Olfaction: The nose detects smells.
• pH Balance: Regulates blood acidity by controlling CO2 levels.
Keeping it Healthy
• Do not smoke: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and COPD.
• Avoid pollutants: Stay away from chemicals, dust, and secondhand smoke.
• Exercise: Strengthening lung muscles improves efficiency.
• Hydration: Drinking water keeps mucus thin and easier to clear.
